These photos were taken at a current project site along the shores of the Jefferson River. Due in part to continuous livestock and wildlife grazing, invasive species and annual grasses have replaced the willows and cottonwoods that should be present as a part of a healthy riparian ecosystem. These newly established, shallow-rooted plants cannot stabilize the streambank during the river's high water flows. As a result, the bank is eroding excessively along this river bend. In these photos, you can see where the bank has sloughed off into the river below. Ecologic has partnered with the NRCS (Natural Resource Conservation Service) to design a streambank protection project for 2008. Stay tuned for project progress reports.
